Spring Break Just Isn't For Everyone

Many people will be traveling and vacationing for Spring Break, but many employees at the University of Mississippi will still be scheduled to work due to University policy.

The university mandates that every administrative office on campus should stay open for business the majority of the calendar year. The offices are closed on Martin Luther King Day, The Fourth of July, Good Friday, Labor Day, four days out of the Thanksgiving break, and two weeks for Christmas Break.

Stacey Reycraft, Director of Student Disability Services, would much rather be at home with her loved ones during Spring Break. She also thinks the university is seeling itself short because it still has to pay for utilities used during the break.

"I feel that everyone focuses on leaving campus during Spring Break, but noone actually notices that the campus is still open and some of us will still have to be here," says Reycraft.

Robin Yekaitis, 32, will also be one of the many employees to work at the university during spring break.

“I have a doctor’s appointment and dentist appointment during Spring Break, so I’ll be out of the office for 3 days. I’m going to take that time doing extravagant things such as getting a car tune-up and my banking,” says Yekaitis.

Besides select holidays throughout the year, university staff are only allowed to be off if they use their trivial amount of sick days.
