Most Ole Miss students see Spring Break as a time for rest, relaxation, and recuperation from midterms, but for some, it is a week to spend reconnecting with loved ones.
Freshman Katelyn Watts plans to rent a house in Destin, Florida with her friends from Mississippi State University.
“I’ve grown up around the same group of people since like, age zero,” said Katelyn. “My friends have become a part of my extended family. When all of us split up and went to different colleges, it was kind of unnerving. But when we found out that Ole Miss and MSU have the same week off for Spring Break, I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to spend time with the people I’ve lost touch with and miss.”
Freshman Caroline May has similar plans for her week-long vacation. Caroline and fifteen of her Kappa Delta sisters have rented a house on Crystal Beach in Florida, with Caroline’s mother as the designated chaperone.
“I hardly ever have time to go home, and I feel about that. I really do. But freshman year is insane. So when my mom asked if she could tag along as the quote unquote chaperone, I couldn’t say no. With spring parties and formals coming up, this is the last time I’ll see my family until summer,” said Caroline.
So while both girls will use this break from classes to soak up some rays and escape the currently dreary weather of Oxford, this break means more to them than “fun in the sun”.

Spring Break Adventures
Many students from all colleges are beginning to get very excited about Spring Break, for most, it is a time to relax and have fun, but for some it is a time to practice.
Students Murphy Turner and Kyle Barbeck, both 20 will be experiencing their spring breaks quite differently from one another.
Turner, 20 who attends Ole Miss will be spending his spring break in Baton Rouge for SROW and will be participating in a volleyball tournament in Destin, Florida.
SROW is the National Orientation Directors Association's (NODA) Region VI Conference. Turner is looking forward to this and spending time with his Orientation Family.
He said, “There is nothing that can compare to SROW, it is a great bonding time and I enjoy getting to know other orientation leaders from other schools.”
Turner could not be more excited to travel to Destin. He will be living in a house with 5 people at the San Destin Resort.
He stated, “I’m really looking forward to beach volleyball, it is one of my favorite things to do while in Destin…it’s a good workout for your legs!”
Barbeck, 20 who is a student at Northwest Texas Community College will be preparing for 4 baseball games over spring break.
He has been playing baseball ever since he was 4. Barbeck started as shortstop then when he was 12 he wanted to try out pitching. Ever since he has been a left-handed pitcher.
Barbeck will also be practicing over break. Their routine includes playing catch, having scrimmages against each other, running drills, pitching, and practicing hitting.
He said, “I’m happy here, it is what I do and I love the game.”
Barbeck has a record of 4-0 and the team’s record is 10-6.
For most people Spring Break means going to the beach, having fun, and being with friends but for some, Spring Break means a time to save for working and saving money.
Kelli Harrison, a junior at Ole Miss, will be using her Spring Break to return to her hometown and work at the YMCA. The YMCA hosts many different camps for children of all ages. At the camp the children are involved in lots of activities. They also go on occasional field trips.
“The field trip’s the best part because the boss doesn’t come, everyone is relaxed, and the children really enjoy it,” Harrison said.
Harrison has been working at the YMCA for almost 5 years. For the past year Harrison has been taking care of a special needs child. Sometimes it’s a bit tiring to work with so many children all the time, but it is a worthwhile experience Harrison said.
A current senior at Ole Miss, Brantley Pierce, will also be returning home for his Spring Break. Pierce is currently student teaching at Oxford High School. Over the break he will be completing his 10-day lesson plan, which requires a lot of work and detail. Like Harrison he enjoys working with children and young people.
“I like student teaching,” Pierce said. “The best moment is when a student finally understands after they have been struggling with it for a while.”
Pierce and Harrison will be busy over Spring Break but both have expressed that they do have plans for the summer. They are both saving up for a trip to Italy this summer.

University of Mississippi’s spring break is right around the corner and many students are planning to spend it relaxing on a beach.
Key West is a popular spot for college students across the country, including many Ole Miss students. It is American’s only Caribbean island, filled with white sand, crystal blue water, and countless bars.
Junior, Katie Jacobson, from Columbus, GA will be heading down to the Florida Keys, specifically Key West, with a few friends from home this year. “My uncle has a house on the beach, and since I am finally 21 he gave me permission to invite some of my friends down there for the break. Its going to be a lot of fun.” Jacobson said.
This small island is rich with historic homes, unique buildings, and well-known restaurants and bars. The attitude in Key West can be laid back, but during
spring break people are ready to party given any excuse.
The University’s spring break begins Friday, March 11th. Most students will begin heading down to Florida that same weekend. Sophomore, Lucy Grove, From Mobile, Alabama, will also spend her spring break in Key West.
“Last year I went to Colorado and skied, I wanted to do something that felt more like ‘spring break’ so I thought going to the beach would be perfect.” Grove said, “Once I found out that a few of my friends were thinking about going to Key West I knew that’s where I was going.”

SPRING BREAK
Ole Miss students are headed in many different directions for the upcoming 2011 Spring Break.
While many students are sticking with the traditional beach vacation, freshmen Robert Margeson and Judson Castle are breaking the trend and headed to Colorado for colder weather and a change of scenery.
“I’ve done the beach thing for spring break for a while now, so I decided to switch it up this year and shred some fresh powder in Telluride,” said Margeson.
The two friends will not be taking the easy way to Colorado.
“We have friends in Texas, so we’re making a three day drive to Colorado. I know it sounds crazy but we love to road trip, and we figured we’d save the money on expensive flights and get to see a lot of the country that we haven’t before”.
They plan on snowboarding for four days in Colorado, then making the drive back to Oxford in two days.

The perfect time for a break
After all of the well-rested students returned from Christmas break students were ready to take on the academic challenges of the second semester. But as weeks turned to months the Ole Miss students continued to grow more and more restless. “School was easy at first” says freshman Hayden Wieck “ Now I’m just ready to get to beach get some beer and rage.” Wieck continued to tell me about how he and fellow members of his “frat” rented a house that sleeps twelve in Cabo, Mexico. “I am so sick of taking tests and trying to stay awake in class spring break is definitely the best break of the year and plus Mexico is going to be sweet. “
Not everybody is having an exciting spring break like Hayden. Evers Miller a freshman for Nashville, Tennessee has far different plans. Miller plans on going to Iowa for his grandparent’s 60th anniversary party. “It sucks that I can’t go to a beach with all of my friends but it will be fun to see my family and it’s not like its everyday that you get to see your grandparents 60th anniversary”.
No matter what your plans are for spring break everyone agrees that this break has arrived at the perfect time. “Spring Break is more than just a time to get drunk on a beach” says freshman Cash Roper “It is a much needed break from homework and test”.
Since returning to school from Christmas this has been one of the longer stretches in the year without a break. Most students would have an even harder time of succeeding through midterms if they didn’t have a week off of school ahead of them. The break also gives students the energy to take on the remainder of the school year. The final stretch is often the toughest one and students will do better if they are more eager and energized.
